Grounds and Estate
Grounds and Estate "And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done The silver apples of the moon , The golden apples of the sun." (W B Yeats "The song of Wandering Aengus").
Lisdonagh House has a magnificent position set amidst 200 acres of woodland and parkland.
The fact that there is so much land with the house ensures guests exclusivity and provides wonderful opportunities to go for woodland walks or to ramble around the estate.
The House looks onto Lough Hackett, a private Lake, which forms part of the estate. The lake is 100 acres in total and apart from providing magnificent views, is primarily for angling and coarse fishing. On the lake is a little man-made Island or "Crannóg", thought to have been built in the early Christian period, ie 5th - 12th Century. On a calm day it is a delightful trip over to the Island in a rowing boat.
The estate has very old trees. The Chestnut tree closest to the house is about 280 years old. In the front field is a crab apple tree at least 180 years old. "The trees are in their Autumn beauty, The woodland paths are dry, Under the October twilight the water Mirrors a still sky" ( W B Yeats "The Wild Swans of Coole"). We have horses for trekking at Lisdonagh, which can be organised for experienced riders (24 hrs notice required and subject to availability).
